What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the effects of a self-hypnosis training program on chronic pain management for patients attending a pain clinic. This pilot study aims to assess changes in 24-hour pain levels at 3 and 6 months after the intervention, as well as the impact on functional pain effects, anxiety and depression scores, and quality of life. The study builds on previous oncology hypnosis programs and refines the approach for chronic pain patients, hypothesizing improvements in pain, anxiety, and quality of life. The intervention consists of an 8-session self-hypnosis training involving exercises focused on stress management and pain perception, including techniques like the rucksack metaphor, acceptance, pain visualization, and resource mobilization through levitation and catalepsy. Participants are randomly assigned to either the self-hypnosis group or a psycho-education and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) group, both comprising eight 90-minute sessions. The psycho-education/CBT group covers pain education, neurophysiology, and interactive discussions to manage pain and anxiety or depression. Participants complete self-administered questionnaires on pain, anxiety, depression, and quality of life at five time points: start, mid-intervention, end of intervention, and at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. They also keep a diary recording their self-hypnosis practice weekly, noting time and duration. Outcome measures include the Numerical Rating Scale for pain, the Brief Pain Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the SF-36 quality of life survey. Data analysis will compare changes over time and explore correlations between practice and outcomes. The study runs from February to December 2024 in Montreal, Canada.
