Sensory Filtering in the Human Basal Ganglia as a Mechanism of Parkinson's Disease
Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age over 18 years
- Diagnosed with clinically definite, advanced idiopathic Parkinson's disease
- Normal or essentially normal brain MRI before surgery
- Available for follow-up visits throughout the study
- Elected to undergo DBS surgery with subthalamic nucleus as the surgical target
- For control participants: Age over 18 years
- No diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, other movement disorder, or significant neurological disease
You will not qualify if you...
- Age under 18 years
- Medical conditions increasing surgical risk such as uncontrolled hypertension, heart disease, or coagulopathy
- Diagnosis or suspicion of atypical Parkinsonism or drug-induced Parkinsonism
- Diagnosis of psychogenic movement disorder
- Previous DBS surgery or ablation
- Clinical dementia or low Dementia Rating Scale score
- Unable to withhold dopaminergic medications for at least 12 hours before visits
- For control participants: Previous diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, other movement disorder, or significant neurological disease
