Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age 18 years or older
- Two or more signs of systemic inflammatory response syndrome: fever above 38.3°C, hypothermia below 36°C, heart rate over 90 bpm, breathing rate over 20 per minute, high white blood cell count over 12,000/microL, or low white blood cell count below 4,000/microL
- Suspected or proven infection
- Presence of at least one organ dysfunction such as:
- Cardiovascular issues (hypotension with systolic blood pressure under 90 mmHg or mean arterial pressure under 70 mmHg)
- Tissue hypoperfusion (elevated lactate above normal laboratory limits)
- Acute lung injury (PaO2/FiO2 ratio less than 250 without pneumonia or less than 200 with pneumonia)
- Acute kidney injury (urine output less than 0.5 mL/kg/hr for at least 2 hours or serum creatinine above 2.0 mg/dL)
- Acute liver injury (total bilirubin above 2 mg/dL)
- Acute coagulopathy (platelet count under 100,000/microL or INR over 1.5)
You will not qualify if you...
- Under 18 years of age
- Cardiac arrest at presentation
- Advanced directives that prohibit aggressive organ supportive management
