Aim 3 recruits patients with bilateral DBS who wear actigraphy watches to monitor sleep before and after clinical programming at 6 and 12 months. Participants will undergo detailed brain imaging, clinical motor exams, and sleep questionnaires. Sleep studies include video-polysomnography and recordings from brain surface strips and DBS leads. Data will be collected during controlled DBS stimulation and analyzed to compare brain activity across sleep stages and DBS settings. Follow-up includes clinical rating scales and actigraphy data at multiple timepoints up to 12 months. The study monitors safety and uses advanced statistical methods to understand DBS effects on sleep in PD.

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease
  • At least 21 years old
  • Existing or planned 7 Tesla brain imaging
  • Planned surgery at University of Minnesota to implant DBS system in GPi or STN with directional lead(s) as part of routine clinical care
  • Planned or completed bilateral DBS surgery at University of Minnesota in GPi or STN with directional lead(s), with initial programming session at least 2 weeks away
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Other significant neurological disorder
  • History of dementia
  • Post-operative complications or adverse effects affecting safety or study results (e.g., ON stimulation dystonias)
  • Pregnant women
  • Unsafe recent radiation exposure combined with expected fluoroscopy dose for research procedures
