The purpose of this research study is to examine the effect of social connectedness on the brain. Study procedures include one Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scan, one Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan, one Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) scan, an electroencephalogram (EEG), and in-person and phone call follow-ups.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Able to give written informed consent
  • Age 55 or older
  • English speaking
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Cannot have MRI due to claustrophobia, body size, brain changes, or metal in the body including braces
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Serious medical or neurological illness affecting safety or study goals
  • Pervasive developmental or primary psychotic disorders
  • Current severe substance use disorder (except marijuana or nicotine)
  • History of significant head injury causing long-term cognitive decline
  • Current psychosis or active suicidal/homicidal thoughts
  • History of neurological abnormalities like seizure disorder or stroke
  • Full scale IQ below 70
  • Cannot have PET due to poor vein access
  • Prior research radiation exposure exceeding limits within the past year
  • Bleeding disorder or use of blood thinners if arterial line needed
  • Blood donation within 8 weeks before study start
  • REM sleep disorder
  • Lifetime brain injury such as TBI, epilepsy, stroke, or TIA
  • Electroconvulsive, ketamine, or similar brain therapies in past 6 months
  • High risk for stroke based on Framingham Stroke Risk Profile
  • Current cancer
