Collecting Molecular and Clinical Data from South Carolina Medicaid Patients Aged 40 to 70 Studying Type 2 Diabetes and Healthy Controls to Improve Prediction and Management of Diabetes and Kidney Disease

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying South Carolina Medicaid-enrolled adults aged 40 to 70 with Type 2 Diabetes T2D and a smaller group of healthy controls to find data patterns linked to chronic kidney disease CKD diagnosis and progression. This observational study aims to improve how doctors predict health outcomes and develop new strategies to prevent or manage T2D and its complications. The study is supported by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as part of a Rural Health Initiative to better serve underserved communities. Participants include those diagnosed with T2D or healthy controls who are Medicaid recipients. The study collects various types of data including blood, saliva, and stool samples, questionnaires, cognitive brain games, electronic health records, wearable device data using a Fitbit, and lifestyle and behavioral information. T2D participants also receive support from a Certified Diabetes Educator to help manage their condition and make lifestyle changes. Throughout the study, participants will provide biospecimens and complete assessments over up to 24 months after enrollment. Researchers will analyze the collected data to identify key factors related to CKD diagnosis and T2D progression. Participants are compensated for their time and travel, may keep their Fitbit device, and have ongoing access to diabetes education support. The study involves regular data collection but does not involve any interventions or treatments.
