Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Patients 65 years old or older
  • ASA Class I to III
  • Scheduled for surgical repair of femoral neck, intertrochanteric, or subtrochanteric hip fractures
  • Time from diagnosis to surgery is more than 48 hours
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Unable to walk about 3 meters or across a room without assistance before the fracture
  • Emergency surgery required
  • Presence of congestive heart failure, asthma, anemia (hemoglobin less than 90 g/L), or hypoalbuminemia (albumin less than 35 g/L)
  • Abnormal blood clotting function
  • Severe aortic stenosis
  • Injection site infection or increased intracranial pressure
  • Participation in previous trials or deemed unsuitable for randomization by doctor
  • Unable to provide written informed consent or consent from representative
