What this Trial Is About
Ageing and inflammation represent two main drivers of DDD, a progressive, chronic condition involving vertebral bone, cartilaginous endplate and intervertebral disc. In vitro investigation of the DDD-associated processes on single compartments of the spine unit or ex vivo animal models fail in recapitulating the complex spine pathophysiology or suffer from inter-species differences. Given these premises, a human organotypic model of the spine unit would represent a suitable tool to investigate the DDD-related pathways and to screen promising treatments such as MSC-based therapies.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Signature of the Informed Consent for the study
- Age 30 to 60 years for DDD patients
- Pfirrmann grade III-V
- Need to undergo spinal surgery
- Signature of the Informed Consent for the study for adipose-derived MSC isolation
- Age 18 to 50 years for adipose-derived MSC isolation
- Need to undergo surgery involving removal of adipose tissue
- Signature of the Informed Consent for the study for placenta-derived MSC isolation
- Age 18 to 50 years for placenta-derived MSC isolation
- Women who are pregnant or who have given birth within the last 6 hours
You will not qualify if you...
- Presence of HIV infection
- Presence of HBV infection
- Presence of HCV infection
- Presence of TP (syphilis) infection
