What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients to compare the effects of early palliative care provided by a palliative care specialist versus standard care managed by a medical oncologist. This study aims to determine if early palliative care improves quality of life or survival, especially given the availability of newer targeted therapies and immunotherapies that have less toxicity than traditional chemotherapy. The study involves patients with advanced lung cancer starting systemic treatment and considers that oncologists now often provide some palliative care themselves. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will receive early palliative care by attending a palliative care clinic once a month during the first three months along with their routine oncology visits; the other group will receive only the standard systemic treatment for advanced lung cancer with oncology clinic visits. Both groups will undergo systemic treatment appropriate for their condition. Throughout the study, participants will complete quality of life questionnaires (FACT-L and EQ-5D-5L), a mental health questionnaire (PHQ-9), and pain assessments once a month for three months and again at six months. The primary outcome measured is the quality of life score (FACT-L Total Score) 12 weeks after treatment begins. These assessments help monitor patient well-being and the impact of early palliative care on their health.
