Impact of Early Psychiatric Referral on Depression, Anxiety, and Quality of Life in Adults Undergoing Surgery for Musculoskeletal Sarcoma

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the feasibility of providing early access to mental healthcare during sarcoma treatment and how this early psychiatric care relates to depression, anxiety, postoperative outcomes, and patient satisfaction in patients undergoing surgery for musculoskeletal sarcoma. The study is a randomized pilot designed to provide insights into mental health support for these patients. The research is led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and focuses on both bone and soft tissue sarcoma cases. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups the Early Psychiatric Referral group or the No Referral group. Those in the referral group will be directed to the MSK Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, while those in the no referral group will receive no psychiatric referral as part of the study. Specific psychiatric treatments are not dictated by the study beyond the referral process. During the study, participants will attend scheduled visits over a period of two years, during which researchers will track how many complete these visits. Assessments will include mental health status related to depression and anxiety, surgical outcomes, and patient satisfaction. The study aims to monitor the impact of early psychiatric involvement on overall quality of life for patients receiving surgical treatment for sarcoma.
