Study Comparing Remote Language Interpretation Methods for Spanish- and Mandarin-Speaking Breast Cancer Patients With Limited English Skills

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating three different remote medical interpreting methods for breast cancer patients with limited English proficiency LEP who speak Spanish or Mandarin. The study focuses on patients with Stage II and III breast cancer and involves English-speaking healthcare providers who do not speak Spanish or Mandarin. The purpose is to compare these interpreting methods and understand their impact on communication errors and implementation potential. The study has two phases. Phase 1 is a randomized controlled trial comparing Remote Simultaneous Medical Interpreting RSMI, Remote Consecutive Medical Interpreting RCMI, and Remote Consecutive Video Medical Interpreting RCVI during outpatient clinical encounters. Phase 2 involves a mixed-methods evaluation to gather data on barriers, facilitators, and the potential for implementing these interpreting methods in clinical settings. Participants will be audio-recorded during their clinical encounters to assess the number of interpretation errors within 30 days. The study also collects feedback from clinic staff in Phase 2 to understand how well these interpreting methods can be integrated into practice. The trial is sponsored by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and involves adult patients and healthcare providers over 18 years old. Participation includes appointments with oncology teams, audio recordings, and follow-up assessments.
