Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Primary, unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA)
- Age 50 years or older
You will not qualify if you...
- Surgical complication requiring altered rehabilitation
- Unable to attend outpatient rehabilitation 2 times per week for 3 weeks after surgery
- Unable to put on or remove compression garment
- Neurological, cardiovascular, or unstable orthopedic conditions limiting function
- Medical conditions causing chronic lower extremity swelling
- Had contralateral total knee arthroplasty within the past year
- Pain greater than 5 out of 10 in the other knee or plans for knee replacement in the next year
- Current tobacco smoker
- Use of illegal drugs
- Uncontrolled diabetes with hemoglobin A1c level greater than 8.0
- Body mass index greater than 40 kg/m2
