The objectives of this application are to 1) compare short- and long-term harm reduction and abuse liability potential of a nicotine salt pod-based electronic cigarettes (EC) in adult (AA) exclusive EC, dual cig-EC, and exclusive cig users, 2) characterize factors that predict who switches fully, partially, or not at all, and 3) examine if harm reduction can be further enhanced by treating dual users with varenicline (VAR) to eliminate cigarette smoking.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- 21 years of age or older
- Smoke more than 5 cigarettes per day
- Smoked cigarettes for more than 6 months
- Verified smoker with carbon monoxide above 5 ppm
- Have a functioning telephone
- Interested in switching to electronic cigarettes
- Willing to take varenicline and attend all study visits
You will not qualify if you...
- Interested in quitting smoking
- Used smoking cessation drugs in the past month
- Used other tobacco products in the past 30 days (cigarillos, cigars, hookah, smokeless tobacco, pipes)
- Used electronic cigarettes on more than 4 of the past 30 days
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure (systolic over 180 or diastolic over 105)
- Had a heart-related event in the past 30 days
- Medical reasons preventing use of varenicline, including unstable heart conditions, recent cardiac events or stroke, kidney problems, severe allergies, epilepsy or seizures, recent psychiatric hospitalization, or active suicidal thoughts
- Pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- Planning to move from the Kansas City area during the study
- Another household member enrolled in the study
