What this Trial Is About
This clinical trial aims to evaluate a table-top water pitcher filtration system to reduce arsenic exposure among people using private wells with elevated arsenic levels above 5 micrograms per liter. The study also seeks to understand factors that affect how well people adopt and continue using the filter, including household income and home ownership. The trial focuses on arsenic poisoning, environmental exposure, and water-related diseases. Participants will receive a free 12-cup water filter pitcher along with three replacement filter cartridges. They will be asked to use the pitcher and replace cartridges as recommended by the manufacturer. The study runs over 12 weeks, with the first 4 weeks focusing on initial use and assessment, followed by an 8-week period to observe the sustainability of filter use. All participants are in one study group receiving the same filtration system. During the study, participants will collect and mail water and urine samples at the start, at 4 weeks, and at 12 weeks to measure arsenic concentrations. They will also complete online questionnaires at these same time points. Researchers will measure water and urinary arsenic levels, and assess the reach, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of the filtration system. The total participation lasts about 12 weeks with ongoing monitoring of filter use and arsenic exposure.
