What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating a lifestyle modification program to improve control of metabolic syndrome in Chinese adults. This mixed-methods study includes a 2-arm randomized controlled trial and a qualitative study. The metabolic syndrome is defined by having three or more abnormal findings among raised blood pressure, triglycerides, lowered HDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and central obesity. Assessments will be done at the start, after 12 weeks of active intervention, and again at 20 weeks. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group receiving a 12-week tailored, nurse-led, person-centred program aimed at promoting sustainable lifestyle changes, or the control group receiving a one-time 15-minute structured lifestyle advice session. The study is conducted in multiple community centers and focuses on promoting health behaviors and metabolic improvements. During the study, participants will complete various assessments including the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II, measurements of metabolic syndrome components such as BMI, blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL, fasting blood glucose, waist circumference, and health-related quality of life using the SF-12v2 survey. Blood lipids and glucose will be measured with a portable point-of-care analyzer. Outcomes will be tracked at baseline, 12 weeks, and 20 weeks to evaluate changes and metabolic syndrome reversal.
