What this Trial Is About

TRACE-IMPAIR is a prospective, clinical study of consecutive patients that evaluates the relationship between heart failure (HF) and cognitive impairment in relation to carotid and cerebral flow. The carotid and cerebral flow will be assessed using Doppler ultrasonography, and cognitive function will be estimated during routine neuropsychological tests. It is an observational, three(natural)-group, single-center study. It is also an Academic Registry - the scientific activity of the Faculty of Medicine, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University, and John Paul II Hospital.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Clinically stable patients (NYHA I-III symptoms) with heart failure for at least 6 months of ischemic, inflammatory, or genetic cardiomyopathy origin
  • Signed informed consent form
  • Consent to undergo echocardiography, carotid and transcranial Doppler sonography, and neuropsychological tests (MMSE and MoCA)
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Severe, irreversible diseases such as advanced cancer
  • Previously diagnosed dementia including severe dementia with MMSE and MoCA scores below 10
  • Psychiatric conditions affecting cognitive function
  • Acute or decompensated heart failure
  • Reversible causes of heart failure such as tachyarrhythmic, peripartum or toxic cardiomyopathy, acute myocarditis, or acute myocardial infarction
  • Aortic stenosis
  • Stroke within the last 3 months
  • Lack of suitable transcranial Doppler acoustic window
  • Echocardiographic views that prevent adequate measurements
  • Anemia with hemoglobin less than 8 g/dl
  • Abuse of alcohol or psychoactive substances
