Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age between 18 and 50 years old
- Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and using insulin pump therapy
- Using a continuous glucose monitoring device with glucose management indicator between 5.5 and 8.5% and normal hemoglobin levels at screening
- Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea by home sleep apnea test
You will not qualify if you...
- Regular and adherent use of CPAP according to clinical guidelines
- Need for oxygen or advanced positive airway pressure during sleep
- Having had a 'fall-asleep' or 'near miss' accident in the past 6 months
- Working shift schedules
- Having had severe hypoglycemia (one or more episodes in past 3 months) or diagnosis of hypoglycemic unawareness
- One or more emergency room visits for poor glucose management in past 6 months
- Proliferative retinopathy
- Fasting triglycerides over 400 mg/dL
- Liver transaminases more than twice the upper limit of normal
- History of renal transplantation or serum creatinine over 1.5 mg/dL
- Anemia (hemoglobin under 13.0 g/dL in men or under 11.6 g/dL in women)
- Acute coronary syndrome or stroke in past 6 months
- Severe hypertension (blood pressure over 180/105 mmHg)
- Other significant health conditions including unstable angina, recent heart failure hospitalization, serious heart rhythm problems, NYHA Class over 2, oxygen-dependent pulmonary disease, active or chronic infections, thyroid or endocrine disorders like Cushing syndrome or acromegaly
- Recent major surgery
- Major psychiatric disorders
- Use of medications that affect metabolic assessments such as systemic glucocorticoids, antipsychotics, thiazide diuretics, beta-blockers, daily aminophylline or theophylline, or immunosuppressants
- Currently pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or nursing
- Abuse of smoking, alcohol, or illegal drugs
