Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Age 18 to 35 years old for younger adults without cognitive impairment based on MoCA
  • Age 55 years or older for older adults without cognitive impairment based on MoCA
  • Willing and able to give informed consent and comply with study requirements
  • Age 55 years or older with clinical diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment confirmed by study doctor
  • Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 18 or higher (21 or higher for mild AD)
  • Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) score of 0.5 or higher
  • Demonstrated or reported impairments in autobiographical memory
  • Stable dose of memory loss medications (e.g., cholinesterase inhibitors or memantine) for at least 6 weeks
  • Minimum education level of 8th grade
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score below 26 for cognitively unimpaired participants
  • Major psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or psychosis
  • Blindness or disabilities preventing task performance
  • Contraindications for MRI
  • Metal in brain, skull, or body not cleared by a doctor (excluding dental fillings)
  • Age below 55 years for mild cognitive impairment patients
  • History of progressive or genetic neurological disorders other than MCI
  • History of acquired neurological diseases such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or tumors
  • History of head trauma with prolonged loss of consciousness
  • Poorly controlled headaches or chronic migraine medication
  • History of seizures, epilepsy, or relevant family history except benign seizures
  • Unstable or uncontrolled medical conditions that may cause emergencies or complications
  • Contraindications to transcranial alternating current stimulation including recent seizures, neuroactive drug use, implanted medical devices, or active scalp skin conditions
  • Devices such as pacemakers, medication pumps, nerve stimulators unless cleared by a doctor
