Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Patient self-reported history of nephrolithiasis
- Current symptoms similar to previous nephrolithiasis episodes in pain character, quality, location, intensity, or past surgeries
- Self-reported moderate to severe pain greater than 5 out of 10 on visual pain scale
- Normal vital signs (afebrile)
- Agree to informed consent as required by IRB and local practice
- No contraindications to standard therapy such as fluids, NSAIDs, opioids
- Ability to comply with virtual reality treatment
- Will keep the VR/AR headset on for the entire calming experience
- Understands the instructions provided
You will not qualify if you...
- Under 18 years of age
- Pregnant
- Chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia
- Severe anxiety or claustrophobia
- Severe motion sickness or previous motion sickness from VR
- Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) less than 60 or chronic kidney disease diagnosis
- Previous opioid dependence
- Need for immediate surgery due to obstructing stones with urinary tract infection
- Diagnoses requiring hospital admission such as sepsis or myocardial infarction
- Audio or visual impairment preventing appreciation of headset stimuli
- Patients given opioids as first-line pain medication prior to study participation
