The goal of this prospective cohort study is to investigate the vestibular function in children with unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The main hypothesis of the study is that abnormal vestibular test results will be found in 20-30 % of the children with sensorineural hearing loss. Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Children aged 3 to 10 years
- Unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss greater than 20 dB bone conduction pure tone average at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz
- Written informed consent from parents
You will not qualify if you...
- Previous inner ear surgery
- Visual impairment preventing fixation on a dot one meter away
- Congenital nystagmus
- Limited eye muscle mobility
- Allergy to VEMP electrodes
- History of symptomatic head or neck trauma
- Use of medicines that alter vestibular function, such as sedative antihistamines
