Visceral Sensitivity in IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Adults aged 18 to 65 years
- For IBS group: diagnosis of IBS by Rome III criteria with no organic cause for symptoms
- For active ulcerative colitis group: diagnosis confirmed by at least one sigmoidoscopy
- For ulcerative colitis in remission group: diagnosis and remission confirmed by sigmoidoscopy; for subgroup with IBS symptoms, Rome III criteria for IBS applies
- For healthy controls: no abdominal pain or complaints
- For active Crohn's disease group: diagnosis confirmed by at least one sigmoidoscopy
- For Crohn's disease in remission group: diagnosis and remission confirmed by sigmoidoscopy
- Medication affecting gastrointestinal motility or perception must be stopped at least 24 hours before the study
You will not qualify if you...
- Severe kidney or liver disease, thyroid abnormalities, or impaired blood clotting
- History of abdominal surgery except uncomplicated appendectomy
