Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age between 18 and 65 years
- Visual acuity of 20/32 or better using optical correction if needed
- Ability to speak English well enough to complete assessments and consent
- Diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or schizophreniform disorder confirmed by DSM-5 criteria and SCID-5 interview
- Diagnosis of bipolar disorder (type I, II, or unspecified) confirmed by DSM-5 criteria and SCID-5 interview
You will not qualify if you...
- Inability to understand study instructions or provide informed consent
- Intellectual impairment with WRAT-5 score below 70
- Active intoxication or substance use disorder in the past 3 months
- High risk for suicidal acts or recent suicide attempt within 30 days
- Recent severe violence or extreme agitation within prior 6 months
- Current manic state
- Head injury causing loss of consciousness over 10 minutes
- Electroconvulsive therapy within past 8 weeks
- Diagnosed neurological conditions including tumors, stroke, brain injury, seizure disorders, or pervasive developmental disorders
- Eye problems such as lazy eye, squint, or other ocular pathology
- For healthy controls: any lifetime psychotic disorder, psychiatric hospitalization history, recent psychotropic medication use, or first-degree relative with schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder
- For case-match controls: lifetime psychotic disorder, recurrent or current depressive episodes, persistent psychotic symptoms, psychiatric hospitalization history, recent psychotropic medication use, or first-degree relative with schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder
- For bipolar subjects: persistent threshold psychotic symptoms
