Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- 26 years of age or older
- Body mass index (BMI) of 27 kg/m2 or higher; 25 kg/m2 or higher if Asian
- Not meeting US National Guidelines for 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week
- Reports an average of 3 or more hours of recreational sedentary screen time per day, usually extending until at least 9:00pm
- Usually consumes calories (food or drink) after 8:00pm
- Meets at least 2 criteria for metabolic syndrome:
- Central adiposity: waist circumference over 40 inches (men) or over 35 inches (women)
- Elevated blood pressure: systolic over 130 mmHg and/or diastolic over 85 mmHg or controlled with medication
- Low HDL cholesterol: less than 40 mg/dL (men) or less than 50 mg/dL (women)
- Elevated triglycerides: over 150 mg/dL or controlled with medication
- Elevated fasting glucose: 100 mg/dL or higher or controlled with medication
You will not qualify if you...
- Conditions related to sleep disruption including lactation, pregnancy, midnight care providers, sleep disorders, or severe sleep apnea
- History of hypoglycemia
- Having a pacemaker
- Consuming more than 4 cups of coffee or equivalent caffeine per day or caffeine after 5pm
- Participating in other physical activity, diet, or weight loss programs or studies
- Weight change of 5% or more up or down in the last three months
- Drug abuse or THC use (smoking or edibles)
- Excessive alcohol use (8 or more drinks per week for women; 15 or more drinks per week for men)
- Current smoker or user of any nicotine product including vapor, e-cigarettes, tobacco, patches, or gum
- Taking medications that significantly affect glucose metabolism or sleep such as insulin, corticosteroids, growth hormone, or melatonin
- Previous or current clinical eating disorder or self-reported eating disorder behaviors
- Unstable or poorly controlled blood glucose (e.g., fasting glucose greater than 125 mg/dL)
- Chronic illness associated with weight change such as HIV/AIDS, active cancer, or uncontrolled thyroid disease
- Shift work
- Recent or upcoming travel causing jetlag more than one time zone away from Arizona within 3 months before or during the study
- Current use of evening and nighttime blue light blocking
- Poorly controlled hypertension (systolic 165 or higher or diastolic 100 or higher)
- Any condition or circumstance that would prevent following the study protocol
- Using a non-Android phone as the primary personal phone
