The objective of this study is to conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a photo-narrative communication intervention developed by our study team with patients/parents of children with severe neurological impairment (SNI) and their pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) clinicians to assess feasibility, acceptability, and early efficacy.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Children hospitalized at study sites
- Children aged 6 months through 25 years old
- Children with severe neurological impairment for more than 6 months, defined as permanent static or progressive central nervous system injury causing motor or cognitive impairment and medical complexity
- Parent or legally authorized representative of an eligible child with SNI
- Parent's preferred language of care is English and/or Spanish
- Licensed physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, or respiratory therapists at the study site
You will not qualify if you...
- Child has never previously been discharged home
- Child has an expected hospital stay shorter than 2 days
- Child has a life expectancy less than 4 weeks
- Previous participation in this study by the child or clinician
