Study of Kidney Function in Children With Epilepsy Receiving Long-Term Antiepileptic Drugs

This research aims to assess kidney function in children with epilepsy who attend Sohag University Hospital. It focuses on evaluating the effects of long-term antiepileptic drug AED use on kidney health by measuring various renal biochemical markers, liver functions, urinalysis, and conducting abdominal ultrasound exams. The study includes pediatric patients with idiopathic epilepsy receiving different AED regimens to understand how these medications may impact kidney function. The study is observational and involves collecting clinical data and laboratory test results without administering experimental treatments. Researchers will gather baseline information such as medical history, seizure type, frequency, current medications, and demographic details. Blood samples will be taken to measure serum creatinine, alongside other tests like CBC, electrolytes, arterial blood gases, urinalysis, EEG, and abdominal ultrasound to evaluate kidney and liver function. Participants will be assessed once at enrollment with a single cross-sectional evaluation including physical exams and multiple laboratory tests. The main outcome measured is serum creatinine level, while secondary outcomes include identifying kidney stones, electrolyte imbalances, abnormal urine findings, and abdominal ultrasound results. The study aims to understand the relationship between AED therapy and kidney health in children with epilepsy to guide future monitoring and management.
