What this Trial Is About
This research aims to assess how taking psychotropic medications may be linked to a higher risk of falls in older adults discharged from Ain Shams University Geriatric Hospital. The study also looks at whether these falls lead to fractures as a secondary outcome. It includes both men and women aged 60 years and older, excluding those with cancer or who are bedridden. The study is designed as a prospective cohort study. It will collect baseline information retrospectively from medical records of patients admitted between July 2024 and June 2025. This data includes demographics, drug history, medication adherence measured by the Hill-Bone Medication Adherence Scale, previous falls, cognitive and psychological assessments, nutritional and functional status, and lab tests. After discharge, participants will be followed up by telephone one year later to check for any falls. Participants will provide information through their medical records and a follow-up phone call after one year. Researchers will monitor the occurrence of falls and fractures during this period. The main outcome measured is the association between psychotropic medication use and falls risk one year after hospital discharge. This study is sponsored by Ain Shams University and aims to provide valuable insight into fall risks in older adults taking these medications.
