Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of a cardiac rehabilitation program for stroke survivors. The study aims to determine if adding cardiac rehabilitation to the standard care treatments improves recovery of function and reduces hospital readmissions, recurrent strokes, and mortality. The program focuses on patients diagnosed with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke who are medically cleared for cardiac rehabilitation. Participants are assigned randomly to one of two groups: one group receives a traditional medically supervised cardiac rehabilitation program with 36 sessions of progressive exercise lasting 30 to 50 minutes each, along with educational sessions about cardiovascular disease risk factors. The other group receives standard care therapies such as physical, occupational, or speech therapy as prescribed by their doctors. The cardiac rehab program also includes close monitoring during exercise and possible consultations with rehabilitation psychologists or dieticians based on assessments. During the study, participants undergo various evaluations including walking tests, cognitive assessments, quality of life questionnaires, and measures of physical activity from 30 days to 120 days post-stroke. Researchers will also track hospital readmissions, stroke recurrence, and mortality up to one year after stroke. The study involves ongoing monitoring and assessments to understand the impact of cardiac rehabilitation on stroke recovery over time.

Participants undergo a cardiac rehabilitation program consisting of 36 outpatient exercise sessions (30-50 minutes each) including educational sessions on cardiovascular disease risk factors. Based on initial assessments, participants may be referred for consultations with a rehabilitation psychologist or dietician as needed. Participants also continue to receive their standard of care therapies as prescribed by their physicians.
