What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating how listening to music compares to guided mindfulness in affecting blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of anxiety in healthy adults. This randomized crossover study aims to find out whether music or mindfulness leads to greater reductions in these cardiovascular and psychological measures. The study also explores if individual traits or preferences influence how participants respond to these interventions. Participants will attend a single 3-hour visit where they experience two sessions: a 40-minute music listening session featuring a curated playlist played through noise-cancelling headphones and speakers, and a 40-minute guided mindfulness session led by an experienced team member. The order of these sessions will be randomized, with a 20-minute washout period between them. During the visit, blood pressure and heart rate will be measured at multiple time points throughout each session. Participants will complete questionnaires about anxiety, their experience with music and mindfulness, engagement tendency, and enjoyment of each session. Researchers will assess the cardiovascular effects using automated blood pressure monitors and other devices, aiming to compare changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels. This study will provide insight into how these non-drug interventions influence cardiovascular health in healthy adults.
