Connect2Care Smartphone App Study to Improve Prostate Cancer Knowledge and Screening in African American Men Aged 45 to 69 in Oklahoma

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death among African American men. This research aims to evaluate the Connect2Care App, designed to improve knowledge about prostate cancer, screening benefits, and risks, and to increase readiness for the prostate-specific antigen PSA test. The study compares this app to an existing U.S. Department of Health & Human Services app in a randomized control trial involving African American men aged 45 to 69 in Oklahoma who are not up to date with PSA screening. Participants will be randomly assigned to use either the Prostate Cancer Genius App, which offers culturally tailored educational content, real-time messages, quizzes, testimonials, counseling options, and automated home PSA test ordering or the Prevention Taskforce App, which provides evidence-based prostate cancer information and a companion app for assessments and home PSA test ordering. Both apps are used over a 30-day period, with follow-up support and navigation for social needs referrals provided. During the study, participants knowledge of prostate cancer and screening, app engagement, and acceptability will be assessed through questionnaires and interviews. Researchers will measure PSA screening rates 30 days after enrollment and explore readiness for testing. The study also includes community outreach efforts offering education and free PSA tests. Overall participation lasts about one month with active monitoring and follow-up care options available.
