Adapting an Online Genetic Counseling Program to Improve Genetic Testing in African American Cancer Survivors

This research aims to culturally adapt and evaluate an online educational genetic counseling program to increase participation in genetic counseling and testing among African American cancer survivors at risk for hereditary cancers. The study focuses on individuals diagnosed with female breast cancer, prostate cancer, or colorectal carcinoma, who meet specific genetic testing guidelines. This work involves collaboration with community stakeholders and clinical genetic professionals to address barriers and prepare for future broader studies. Participants will receive access to a culturally tailored online genetic counseling intervention designed to educate and encourage genetic testing. Questionnaires will be completed before the intervention, immediately after, and again three months later to assess changes in intention and uptake of genetic counseling and testing. The study includes ongoing collaboration with community leaders to translate findings and develop dissemination strategies. Participants will complete questionnaires at three time points before the online counseling, right after the intervention, and at a three-month follow-up. These assessments include measures of genetic counseling uptake, behavioral intentions, experiences of discrimination, medical mistrust, perceived healthcare access, and cancer family impact. The study monitors the impact of the intervention over time to understand its effects on knowledge, attitudes, and participation in genetic testing among at-risk African American cancer survivors.
