This research aims to improve self-compassion in adolescent dancers aged 13 to 18 who are recovering from injuries to the foot, ankle, or lower leg. It evaluates the use of a gamified mental health app called SuperBetter alongside standard physical therapy during the recovery process. The study is designed as a randomized controlled trial to compare outcomes with and without the app. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. Those in the treatment group use the SuperBetter app for 10 minutes a day, five days a week, over 12 weeks, in addition to attending their physical therapy sessions. The control group attends their physical therapy appointments and completes questionnaires but does not use the mental health app. Throughout the study, participants complete questionnaires measuring anxiety, depression, pain, mobility, and self-compassion at multiple time points up to 24 months. Researchers monitor the number of participants who return to full, unrestricted dance at 3, 6, and 12 months after injury. The total follow-up includes assessments at enrollment and at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months to track recovery and mental health changes.
