Study of Infection and Inflammation Markers in Adults Hospitalized with Moderate to Severe COVID-19

Researchers are studying hospitalized patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 infection to understand how their bodies respond to the virus and clear the viral load. This observational pilot study will monitor inflammatory markers, infection severity indicators, and patient characteristics to capture the diseases progression and factors affecting recovery. The study is led by University Hospital Hradec Kralove and includes patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection requiring hospital admission. The study will include 30 consecutive hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Various clinical and laboratory data will be collected, including patient demographics, comorbidities, smoking and drug history, symptom duration, and treatments such as remdesivir, convalescent plasma, monoclonal antibodies, corticosteroids, and tocilizumab. Researchers will also record organ support used during hospitalization and patient outcomes at discharge, 28 days, and 90 days. Laboratory markers including serum and tracheal nucleocapsid antigen levels, viral load, inflammatory proteins like C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, and other biochemical values will be assessed. Participants will be regularly evaluated through clinical exams, lab tests, and imaging to track infection severity and inflammation. Researchers will measure lung function severity based on initial nucleocapsid antigen and interleukin-6 levels. They will also study how treatments and patient factors influence viral load and inflammatory markers over 28 days. The study excludes patients with interstitial lung disease or congestive heart failure. Participant involvement lasts through hospital stay and follow-up at 28 and 90 days after admission, providing a comprehensive picture of disease evolution.
