What this Trial Is About
This research aims to assess the use of systematic echocardiography in nursing homes and its effects on heart failure flare-ups and unplanned hospitalizations related to heart and cardiovascular diseases. The trial is designed as an open-label cluster randomized type 1 hybrid study comparing nursing homes with and without echocardiography screening. It includes 30 nursing homes with about 1050 residents aged 65 and older. In the intervention group, residents receive a single echocardiography exam performed by a sonographer at the start of the study. The results are reviewed by a cardiologist and shared with the nursing home and the resident's general practitioner, who may adjust medical care based on the findings. The control group receives usual care without echocardiographic screening. The study observes outcomes over 12 months, focusing on heart failure episodes and cardiovascular-related hospitalizations. Participants are monitored for one year to track heart failure decompensation and any significant changes in medical management following the ultrasound. The study evaluates the feasibility, adoption, and sustainability of echocardiography screening in nursing homes. Data on hospitalizations and clinical changes will be collected to determine the impact of the intervention on residents' cardiovascular health.
