What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating how anatomy-based programming of cochlear implants affects the ability of adults with single-sided deafness SSD to understand speech in noisy environments and perceive music. This study focuses on newly implanted SSD cochlear implant recipients, comparing anatomy-based fitting with standard programming practices. Important hearing aspects such as sound localization and self-reported hearing benefits are also assessed using validated questionnaires. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either anatomy-based fitting or default fitting of the cochlear implants speech processor. The study involves devices like MED-EL cochlear implants with specific electrode models and audio processors such as SONNET 2, SONNET 3, or RONDO 3. The intervention period includes multiple assessments at 3, 6, and 12 months after activation of the audio processor to evaluate speech perception, pitch ranking, timbre perception, melodic interval perception, sound quality, localization, and hearing benefit questionnaires. During the study, participants undergo objective tests for speech perception in noise and various aspects of music perception, along with subjective evaluations through questionnaires like the Music and Cochlear Implant Questionnaire MCIQ, HISQUI19, and SSQ12. The studys primary focus is speech perception in noise at 3, 6, and 12 months post-activation. Participants hearing abilities and satisfaction are monitored over this one-year period to understand the impact of anatomy-based versus standard cochlear implant programming.
