Study of Nutritional Counseling to Improve Heart Health in Adults with Schizophrenia, Psychosis, or Bipolar Disorder

This research aims to compare the impact of nutritional counseling versus no treatment on patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, psychosis, or bipolar affective disorder. These mental health conditions are linked to a shorter life expectancy mainly due to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, often caused by lifestyle factors like smoking, inactivity, and poor diet. The study seeks to understand if nutritional counseling can help prevent cardiovascular problems in these patients. Participants will be randomly divided into two groups one group will receive individualized nutritional counseling based on baseline assessments, while the other group will not receive this intervention during the study period. The counseling sessions last a total of 60 minutes split into two 30-minute parts with a break, following national dietary guidelines aimed at preventing cardiovascular disease. After six weeks, the control group will be offered the same counseling. During the study, participants will meet a nutritionist for initial measurements including nutritional status, biochemical markers, and body measurements. These assessments will be repeated after six weeks to identify any changes between the groups. Researchers will monitor cholesterol levels, blood sugar, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and dietary habits to evaluate the effects of the counseling. The total study duration for each participant is six weeks, with careful monitoring of health markers related to cardiovascular risk.
