Study of Oketani Breast Massage Effects on Breastfeeding Success, Confidence, and Satisfaction in First-Time Mothers

This research aims to evaluate how Oketani breast massage affects breastfeeding success, self-confidence in breastfeeding, and satisfaction among first-time mothers. Breastfeeding is a vital source of nutrition for healthy infant growth, yet breastfeeding rates remain below ideal levels. The study focuses on providing breastfeeding education and Oketani breast massage from the prenatal period to improve correct breastfeeding practices and maternal confidence, with the method being new in the studys country. Participants are divided into two groups. One group receives breastfeeding training and the Oketani breast massage, which involves gentle massaging and milking of the breast base to aid milk secretion and prevent issues like mastitis. Massage is applied before delivery and the first breastfeeding session. The control group receives breastfeeding training only. Both groups complete questionnaires about breastfeeding self-efficacy before and after birth. During the study, participants fill out information forms and self-efficacy scales at various times before training, two weeks after training, and one day after delivery. Satisfaction with breastfeeding and other scales are also assessed postpartum. The study tracks how the massage and training impact breastfeeding confidence and success, with follow-up assessments conducted shortly after birth. Total participation time spans from late pregnancy through the first postpartum day.
