Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age between 50 and 75 years
- Both male and female stroke patients
- Unilateral stroke experienced more than 6 months prior to enrollment
- NIHSS score between 5 and 15 (moderate stroke)
- Able to walk for 10 minutes over ground with assistive devices if needed without physical assistance
- Able to walk for 3 minutes on a treadmill at a speed greater than 0.3 mph without contraindications for aerobic exercise
- Stable cardiovascular condition classified as American Heart Association class B
- Not currently participating in formal rehabilitation
You will not qualify if you...
- Significant resting ECG abnormalities
- Diagnosed cardiovascular abnormalities
- Evidence of myocardial ischemia or significant arrhythmia on stress test
- Hospitalization for cardiac or pulmonary disease within the previous 3 months
- Presence of pacemaker or implanted defibrillator
- Lower extremity claudication
- Unable to communicate with investigators or correctly answer consent comprehension questions
- Severe lower extremity spasticity with Ashworth scale score greater than 2
- Lower extremity weight-bearing pain greater than 4 out of 10 on a visual analog scale
