What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating a new approach to help people living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who also have hearing loss. The study explores combining auditory training with cognitive training to improve both hearing and cognitive abilities. This integrated care approach includes strategies like goal-setting, peer support, and involvement of family members to enhance communication and social interaction. The study is a pilot mixed-method trial involving 62 participants with MCI and hearing impairment, recruited from community centers. The study compares two groups: one receiving the 12-week Empowerment Network for Auditory-Cognitive Training (ENACT) program and a usual care group. The ENACT program has three phases: goal-oriented health counseling led by a nurse in the first two weeks, peer-assisted group auditory-cognitive training sessions in weeks three to eight, and family-engaged active communication training in weeks nine to twelve. The usual care group participates in social activities but does not receive cognitive or auditory training during the study. Participants will be assessed before starting the study and again at weeks 12 and 18. Assessments include tests of cognitive function such as the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog), digit span tests, and Trail-Making Tests. Hearing function and perceived benefits of auditory training, as well as quality of life measures, will also be evaluated. After the intervention, interviews with participants, their family caregivers, and peer health coaches will explore their experiences. The study aims to understand the feasibility and potential benefits of this integrated training approach.
