Study of How Many People Have Narcolepsy Type 1 and Type 2 in Spain and How Often New Cases Occur

Researchers are conducting an observational study to determine how many people in Spain have been diagnosed with narcolepsy type 1 and type 2, which are rare sleep disorders causing excessive daytime sleepiness. The study aims to understand the prevalence and incidence of these conditions by reviewing medical records and tracking new diagnoses over time. The study is sponsored by Takeda and includes participants of all ages and backgrounds. The study involves two groups a core group and a supplementary group. The core group includes people with narcolepsy type 1 or 2 who have been treated or monitored in about 10 public hospitals in Spain and are alive during 2023 or 2024, with retrospective data going back up to 10 years. The supplementary group includes participants from Spain who complete an online survey about their condition in collaboration with a patient advocacy group. No treatments or interventions are given as part of this research. Participants will have their medical records reviewed to collect data on diagnosis, symptom onset, and follow-up visits. The study will measure how common narcolepsy is in different age groups, genders, and populations, as well as track changes in diagnosis delays and prevalence over the past decade. The supplementary group will provide additional insights through survey responses. The total study period includes data collection over several years, with key outcomes assessed within one to two years for prevalence and incidence.
