Researchers are evaluating a flexible and integrative psychiatric care model (FIT) at the Pfalzklinikum to see if it offers advantages over standard care. This model aims to improve cross-sectoral services and provide more flexible treatment intensities for mentally ill children, youth, and adults. The study uses anonymized claims data to compare outcomes such as inpatient stay duration, sick leave days, and treatment continuity between patients treated under the FIT model and standard care in similar hospitals. The FIT model involves a contract with several statutory health insurance funds that supports alternative financing based on a global treatment budget. This encourages the Pfalzklinikum to provide fewer inpatient treatments and more outpatient and day care treatments, including Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) delivered in patients' homes. The model focuses on continuous treatment, stabilization within patients' social and professional environments, and effective use of financial resources. The project started in January 2020 and is planned to run for at least eight years. Participants include patients treated at the Pfalzklinikum or comparable control hospitals from January 2020 to December 2023 with specific psychiatric diagnoses. The study examines primary outcomes like duration of inpatient treatment and sick leave days over up to four years after recruitment. Secondary outcomes cover outpatient care, readmissions, comorbidities, disease progression, costs, and treatment adherence. Data are collected from anonymized claims records, comparing FIT and standard care groups. The evaluation is conducted by an independent expert team to assess the model's effectiveness and cost-effectiveness over time.
