Compare two band and loop space maintainers made from two tooth colored materials; Polyetherethherketone (PEEK) and monolithic Zirconia (BruxZir) as regards to: * Clinical performance of space maintainers in terms of frequency of debonding or fracture of the appliance and health of adjacent gingiva during a one-year follow up. * Wear of the opposing teeth.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Children requiring bilateral extraction of mandibular first primary molars or those with previously extracted molars no more than 6 months prior to intervention
  • Presence of teeth on both the mesial and distal sides of the empty space
  • Angle's Class I molar relationship and/or flush terminal or mesial step primary molar occlusion
  • No periapical or furcal disease affecting the abutment teeth
  • Presence of the developing tooth germ of the succeeding mandibular first premolar
  • At least 1 mm of bone covering the successor tooth germ
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Abutment teeth with decay needing pulp therapy
  • Abutment primary teeth with decay requiring full coverage restoration
  • History of bruxism or clenching
  • Medical, intellectual, or physical disabilities
  • Abnormalities like posterior cross-bite, open bite, or deep bite
