Stroke is a leading cause of severe disability, often resulting in incomplete recovery and impaired mobility, particularly among older survivors. This study investigates the relationship between musculoskeletal somatic dysfunction SD and physiological biomarkers in adults recovering from chronic ischemic stroke. It aims to understand how SD severity correlates with functional status and quality of life QoL in chronic stroke survivors, using a novel osteopathic examination model called the Functional Pathology of the Musculoskeletal System FPMSS. Participants in this observational study are adults who had an ischemic stroke more than three months ago and are ambulatory. They will undergo musculoskeletal examinations using the FPMSS model to quantify SD. The study will measure physiological biomarkers such as energy expenditure and heart rate variability HRV, and collect patient-reported outcomes PROs related to health domains. The research seeks to establish valid biomarkers associated with SD severity and provide insights for future treatment approaches like osteopathic manipulative treatment. During the study, participants will perform assessments including a single 6-minute walk test to evaluate functional capacity. They must be able to sit upright, lie supine, and lie laterally for examinations. Data collection involves physical assessments, physiological measurements, and completion of QoL surveys via SMS or email. The study is expected to enhance understanding of musculoskeletal functions impact on QoL after stroke, with participation lasting from enrollment through planned study completion in 2028.

Duration - 2 to 4 weeks
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.
Duration - Up to 2 years
Participants undergo physical examinations using the osteopathic FPMSS model, perform a 6-minute walk test, and complete quality-of-life surveys via SMS or email. Physiological measurements such as energy expenditure and heart rate variability are collected to study musculoskeletal and nervous system function.
