What this Trial Is About
Researchers are comparing the performance of intensive care unit ICU sub-units with and without additional support from a clinician awareness software called ICU Beacon. The study aims to evaluate whether ICU Beacon can reduce mortality and lessen the severity of organ failures in adult ICU patients. This is a cluster-randomized crossover observational study conducted in adult ICUs with blinded outcome assessors. Patients admitted to ICU sub-units will receive either the standard care alone or standard care plus ICU Beacon software support for clinicians. The two sub-units within each ICU unit will be randomly assigned to either group, then after a set period, the assignments will switch following a two-week wash-out phase without new enrollments. Patients exposed to one condition will not be crossed over only the sub-units change their assigned condition. Participants will be monitored using patient data collected for up to 28 days after ICU admission. Researchers will assess mortality, time alive and free from circulatory and respiratory failure, and organ failure severity using the SOFA score. The study involves continuous patient data collection during ICU stay and up to 28 days post-admission to measure outcomes and compare the impact of the ICU Beacon software on patient care.
