Study Comparing Gum Health in Cigarette Smokers, Heated Tobacco Users, and Non-Smokers

This observational study investigates the periodontal health of cigarette smokers, heated tobacco product users, and non-smokers. The research aims to compare clinical and radiographic signs like probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, plaque index, clinical attachment loss, radiographic bone loss, and gingival crevicular fluid volume. The study seeks to understand if tobacco users have worse periodontal health compared to non-smokers, addressing a gap in research particularly for heated tobacco product users without a history of smoking traditional cigarettes. Participants are grouped into non-smokers who have never used tobacco, cigarette smokers who have smoked at least one cigarette daily for the past 12 months, and exclusive heated tobacco product users who use devices like IQOS daily and have not regularly smoked traditional cigarettes. This cross-sectional study collects data at a single time point without treatments or interventions. Participants will undergo clinical and radiographic periodontal assessments including measurements of marginal bone loss, plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and gingival crevicular fluid volume. The study is conducted at the Department of Prosthodontics at Semmelweis University, with data collected during one visit. Researchers will analyze these measures to compare periodontal health among the groups.
