Mental health disorders are a leading cause of illness worldwide, with their impact expected to grow. This research focuses on early childhood in low and middle income countries, where mental health challenges have increased, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aims to address behavioral problems and improve cognitive and socio-emotional skills in preschool children from vulnerable communities by developing and testing a gaming platform. The intervention involves a gaming platform called "Japi" designed to stimulate cognitive and non-cognitive skills in children aged 3 to 5 years. Children in the intervention group will play the game on tablets twice a week for 15 minutes each session over 12 weeks, totaling 24 sessions. Early Years Educators and Research Assistants will support the children during gameplay. The game sessions focus sequentially on emotional regulation and inhibitory control, working memory and problem-solving, and empathy and planning skills. The control group will follow the standard school curriculum without the gaming intervention. Participants will be evaluated for acceptability and feasibility of the gaming platform and dashboards over about six months. Researchers will assess cognitive functions such as working memory, inhibitory control, emotion recognition, social competence, and behavioral problems using various tests and questionnaires. The study includes monitoring through educator reports and game progress data to understand the intervention's impact on mental health and developmental outcomes in early childhood.
