Actively Recruiting

Researchers are evaluating whether a blood test measuring levels of the brain protein Neurofilament light chain (NfL) can help diagnose dementia in people who have cognitive complaints. This study also looks at changes in speech using voice acoustic tests to assist diagnosis. The trial addresses challenges in detecting dementia early, especially in diverse populations and those without access to advanced brain imaging, aiming to improve timely diagnosis and access to care. Participants will have a single blood draw and a speech test when they first present with cognitive concerns. They will be followed up 12 months later by phone to repeat the speech test and complete questionnaires and cognitive assessments. Those at risk of Fronto-temporal dementia can opt for additional genetic testing using a saliva sample collected at home. Throughout the study, researchers will monitor blood NfL protein levels and analyze speech changes. They will also collect cognitive data and questionnaires at the start and after 12 months. The goal is to develop accessible diagnostic pathways using these tests to support earlier and more accurate dementia diagnosis, benefiting a diverse population within a single healthcare network.
