The ageing population is growing worldwide, and maintaining good oral health in elderly people is increasingly important. Poor dental conditions are common among older adults, with many facing challenges in oral hygiene, especially those in care homes. This study evaluates the use of antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) combined with antibacterial blue light (aBL) using the Lumoral device as an additional treatment to standard oral care in elderly individuals living at home or in care homes to improve oral hygiene, reduce inflammation, and address dry mouth. Participants will use the Lumoral device at home, which combines a special light-activated mouthwash and antibacterial blue light to reduce plaque and harmful bacteria while supporting saliva production. This device is compared to standard oral hygiene practices, which include professional dental cleaning and self-care methods taught by oral healthcare professionals. The study integrates regular dental appointments with enhanced self-care using the Lumoral device as an adjunctive therapy. During the study, participants' oral health will be monitored through various assessments, including measuring bleeding on probing after 9 months. Researchers will evaluate oral hygiene, inflammation, and dryness of the mouth while tracking safety and adherence to treatments. The trial includes elderly people with at least 10 teeth who can follow the study instructions, and it aims to provide evidence on the effectiveness and safety of the Lumoral device in supporting oral health in this population.
