Researchers are exploring how the gut microbiota, the community of microorganisms living in the digestive tract, varies across different levels of physical fitness in healthy males aged 18 to 30 years. The study aims to understand whether specific gut microbiota compositions and functions are linked to exercise capacity, ranging from inactive individuals to elite endurance athletes. This research also seeks to create a fecal microbiota biobank for future studies on intestinal health and the role of gut bacteria in diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Participants will undergo several tests including a maximal incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer to measure oxygen consumption and blood lactate, and a 25-minute submaximal exercise test while fasting. Fecal samples will be collected to analyze the gut microbiota's genetic and metabolic profiles, and to establish a biobank for future fecal microbiota transplant research in mice. The study is observational and does not involve any drug or medical device interventions. During the study, participants will attend three visits involving measurements of body metrics, questionnaires about diet and physical activity, and metabolic assessments at rest and during exercise. Researchers will examine gut microbiota diversity, exercise capacity (like VO2max), and metabolic responses to correlate these factors. The study also includes monitoring for safety and maintaining detailed records of participant health and physical activity. The total participation involves several assessments over a short period, focusing on understanding the link between exercise and gut health.
