Actively Recruiting

Researchers are evaluating a non-drug approach using mindfulness meditation delivered through virtual reality to help reduce craving and prevent smoking relapse in adults with tobacco use disorder. The study aims to show that practicing mindfulness meditation in immersive virtual environments can lower craving caused by cues and stress, ultimately supporting continuous smoking cessation beyond 30 days. Participants include adults aged 18 to 75 who smoke between 10 and 40 cigarettes daily and meet criteria for substance use disorder. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The experimental group will complete six weekly virtual reality sessions in a multisensory cabin, progressing through environments designed to train relaxation and mindfulness, expose them to addiction-related cues, and simulate stressful situations. The control group will receive the standard smoking cessation treatment of nicotine patches and 4 mg nicotine chewing gum for three months. Both groups will be monitored for smoking relapse. Participants will be followed up at three and six months to assess relapse rates. Researchers will measure long-term smoking cessation, defined as continuous abstinence for over 30 days, and monitor craving changes. The study includes various assessments and questionnaires to evaluate participants' progress and response. Total participation spans the intervention period plus follow-up visits at three and six months.
