Stomach cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer death. It is often linked to infection by the Helicobacter pylori bacterium, which affects the stomach lining in about 80% of cases. While developed countries have seen a drop in stomach cancer cases due to reduced H. pylori infections from antibiotic use, the French West Indies still experience higher rates of stomach cancer and deaths compared to mainland France. The reasons may include diet high in salt, meat, and smoked fish, as well as environmental factors like pesticide exposure. The exact rate of H. pylori infection in these patients is currently unknown. This research aims to estimate how common H. pylori infection is among patients newly diagnosed with stomach cancer in the French West Indies. The study will use immunohistochemistry, a laboratory method, to detect H. pylori in tissue samples from these patients. There are no specific treatments or intervention groups in this study since it focuses on measuring infection prevalence. Participants will be adults over 18 years old living in Guadeloupe for more than six months who have a primary diagnosis of gastric cancer. They will provide consent to join the study and have social security coverage. Researchers will collect and analyze tissue samples to detect H. pylori and gather epidemiological data on the infection's role in stomach cancer in this high-risk population. The study's findings will help improve understanding and prevention strategies for stomach cancer in this region.
